Giving Thanks

Giving thanks

In his Thanksgiving proclamation yesterday, President Obama reminded us that, “On Thanksgiving Day, Americans everywhere gather with family and friends to recount the joys and blessings of the past year. This day is a time to take stock of the fortune we have known and the kindnesses we have shared, grateful for the God-given bounty that enriches our lives.”

While the last month has been devastating for many, it has been uplifting to witness the acts of kindness shown by friends, neighbors and strangers to those in need. Although many of us have paused to reflect and be grateful for this support already, Thursday presents us with another day to be thankful for these kindnesses and others.

For the blog this week, we asked our staff and members to share some of the things that they’re most thankful for this year. Here are their thoughts:

Diana, ICS Nurse
“I’m thankful for family, friends, laughter and love.”

Azzlee, ICS Member
“I am thankful for ICS and all of the staff that are there for me. I’m thankful for the opportunities that they’ve given me, and for encouraging us to all teach and help one another.”

Antonio, ICS Medicaid Specialist
“I am thankful for having my loving family, friends, and loved ones in my life. I am thankful for having my quirky funny pet cat that keeps me entertained at home with her various misadventures. And lastly, I am most thankful for my rock band, since music is the greatest gift ever to have come into my life that I will forever be most thankful for.”

Marcus, ICS Member and ICS Office Coordinator, Social Services
“I’m thankful for being healthy and having my loved ones around me.”

Suzette, ICS Employee
“I’m thankful for my new baby girl, Amelie, who has fulfilled my life in ways I can’t even explain!”

Berna, ICS Employee
“I am thankful for being surrounded by a great community and special people who works at ICS and make a change in people lives.”

Vanessa Robles, ICS Member
“I’m thankful for being alive! I was in the hospital last year, in the ICU for two months, so really, being here is what I’m most thankful for.”

Torey Buckley, ICS Member
“I’m thankful for life, my family, and especially for my miracle blessing, Kymani.”

Latricia, ICS Social Program Coordinator
“I’m thankful that I am able to share many good times with my friends and family. I LOVE this time of the year and that I get to catch up with soooo many people I don’t hear from regularly!”

Debra Barr, ICS Member
“I’m thankful for my family and friends, and for ICS, which has helped me achieve things I didn’t know I could do. Now I enjoy painting, crocheting, jewelry making, and meeting new people.”

Diamond, ICS Intake Coordinator
“I’m thankful for my family and for the choices I can make in my life. This year when I was thinking about how to spend Thanksgiving—with my family or my fiancé’s family—I realized that I should spend time with people who aren’t fortunate to have family like mine. So on Thanksgiving day this year, I’ll be doing something different and volunteering with seniors, which I’m so looking forward to.”

Wayne Wallace, ICS Member
“I’m thankful to wake up every day. I’m grateful to spend Thanksgiving with my family and close friends.”

On behalf of Independence Care System, I know that we’re incredibly thankful for our dedicated staff, our spirited members, and our resilient city. We wish all of our members, staff, and their family and friends a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
