ICS Dementia Program Director Nettie Harper recently explained how we work with members with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
Dementia-certified care managers help members with non-pharmacological interventions, thereby avoiding the medication side effects that can increase the member’s risk of falls, or even exacerbate their cognitive loss. They do this by focusing on each individual, getting to know their unmet needs, and capitalizing on their strengths.
“Even though the brain of a person with Alzheimer’s disease can lose up to 40 percent of its function, they can still make connections with others,” Nettie says. “And that’s the part we focus on, how to help make those connections.”
