Our State-of-the-Art Brooklyn Center
ICS’s state-of-the-art Brooklyn Center is the only community-based center of its kind in the City. Featuring the principles of universal design, ICS Brooklyn, located at 25 Elm Place downtown, was created to meet the needs of adults with physical disabilities through innovative architecture and a wide range of services. The 16,000 square foot space features:
- An open plan design that eases wheelchair passage, using curved walls, cork floors, a minimal number of doors (some exceeding Americans with Disabilities Act size requirements), a sliding glass front door on a motion sensor that opens automatically, and vibrant colors to identify service areas.
- A Wheelchair Program, unmatched in NYC, featuring professional therapists, trained wheelchair technicians, a dedicated workshop, repair and maintenance services, a “car wash” for wheelchairs, and a wheelchair evaluation room with a power ceiling lift to aid members transferring in and out of their wheelchairs for repairs and fittings.
- A rich program of social activities, including art classes in the Center’s art studio, knitting and jewelry-making classes, an exercise class for people with Multiple Sclerosis (in partnership with the MS Society), and Friday night hangout. These activities are in addition to the activities held at ICS Manhattan, our original location at 257 Park Avenue South. For more information about ICS’s programs, click here.
